Peace Can Be As Simple As a Hundred Monkeys

I am not making light of the absence of peace in the world. If you put your attention on these events, it is easy to become anxious, depressed and fearful. But that is not my choice. My choice is help find the Hundredth Monkey. The following story is adopted from Ken Keyes, in his book The Hundredth Monkey.
Here is the story of The Hundredth Monkey:
The Japanese monkey, Macaca fuscata, has been observed in the wild for a period of over 30 years. In 1952, on the island of Koshima scientists were providing monkeys with sweet potatoes dropped in the sand. The monkeys liked the taste of the raw sweet potatoes, but they found the dirt unpleasant. An 18-month-old female named Imo found she could solve the problem by washing the sweet potato in a nearby stream. She taught this trick to her mother. Her playmates also learned this new way and they taught their mothers, too. This cultural innovation was gradually picked up by various monkeys before the eyes of the scientists.
Between 1952 and 1958, all the young monkeys learned to wash the sandy sweet potatoes to make them more palatable. Only the adults who imitated their children learned this social improvement. Other adults kept eating the dirty sweet potatoes.
Then something startling took place. In the autumn of 1958, a certain number of Koshima monkeys were washing sweet potatoes — the exact number is not known.
Let us suppose that when the sun rose one morning there were 99 monkeys on Koshima Island who had learned to wash their sweet potatoes. Let's further suppose that later that morning, the hundredth monkey learned to wash potatoes.
THEN IT HAPPENED!
By that evening almost everyone in the tribe was washing sweet potatoes before eating them. The added energy of this hundredth monkey somehow created an ideological breakthrough! But notice. A most surprising thing observed by these scientists was that the habit of washing sweet potatoes then jumped over the sea — Colonies of monkeys on other islands and the mainland troop of monkeys at Takasakiyama began washing their sweet potatoes!* (*Lifetide by Lyall Watson, pp. 147-148. Bantam Books 1980. This book gives other fascinating details.) Thus, when a certain critical number achieves awareness, this new awareness may be communicated from mind to mind. Although the exact number may vary, the Hundredth Monkey Phenomenon means that when only a limited number of people know of a new way, it may remain the consciousness property of these people. But there is a point at which if only one more person tunes-in to a new awareness, a field is strengthened so that this awareness is picked up by almost everyone!
You should know that there are some who refute this story. They claim that the facts do not support the story. This may be true or it may not be true. It does not matter but consider this. YOU can make a difference. Science is discovering marvelous things about the nature of reality, things that the ancients have been telling us for thousands of years. A recent experiment was designed whereby two individuals were separated from each other. One person was the sender and the other was the receiver. The two people were not only separated but they were sealed off from each other; neither light, touch, sound, vibration anyone or anything could enter. They tested this with Coast Guard Fog Signals, Sledge Hammers and sensitive scientific equipment. Each individual was hooked up to equipment to measure heart rates, stress patterns and brain waves. Factors such as anticipation and stress were factored in to account for variation. All things now being equal and secure from outside interference, both individuals were instructed to relax. In the room of the sender, an occasional bright light would go off. This caused the sender to respond in a physiological way that could be measured exactly. Here is the remarkable part. Without any communication between the two people whatsoever, the same result that was observed in the sender’s brain was also observed in the brain of the receiver. So what affected the mind of the sender also affected the mind of the receiver. If that is the case, then the thoughts of one can affect another.
This has profound implications because it proves scientifically that … We Are All Connected! This is what the ancients have been saying all along. This is what Christ meant when he said “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” For the other IS you. Take a brief moment to ponder the significance of this … Science and religion have come to the same conclusion … What we do to each other; we do to ourselves. Our thoughts can affect each other. Your awareness is needed to bring peace to the world. BE the peace you wish to see in the world. Don’t just pray for peace, but BE that peace in every hour of every day. The other day my wife complained to me about my lack of effort in cleaning the kitchen sink. I took exception to that, and we argued. How effective is my prayer for peace if I cannot bring peace into my own home? Why did I resort to anger when other methods could have worked that would have been less aggressive? In the end what did I accomplish? Did she win; did I win; did anyone win? To truly bring peace into the world we must BE peace. You CAN make a difference. BE the peace you wish to see in the world. You may furnish the added consciousness energy to create the shared awareness of a world of peace. You may be the "Hundredth Monkey" . . . . Namaste!
